About Project

 With the growing of aged people, the number of arthritis patients is  expected to grow. Application of joint replacements to patients with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis bring the recovery of walking ability and relief of severe pain. However, in certain cases, the revision operation are applied due to the loosening of joint prostheses which is usually derived from wear debris-induced osteolysis. Although several new trials for reduce wear of joint prostheses materials, there are still unsolved problem on wear. Therefore, another method to establish no wear and low friction is required.
 Our project team focus on the natural synovial joint with excellent lubrication mechanisms. We approach to elucidate the lubrication mechanisms of natural synovial joint and develop the "hydrogel artificial cartilage" with super lubricity based on the bionic design.

Project event: International Symposium

 The International Symposium on Artificial Hydrogel Cartilage, Joint Replacement and Related Topics will be held in Ito Campus, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan, between January 25-26, 2016, in collaboration with the Research Center for Advanced Biomechanics, Kyushu University. This has been planned as a leading international symposium, with active participants from both academia and industry, including biotribology, biomechanics, biomaterials and biomedical engineering. Prevailing issues include articular cartilage, artificial cartilage, orthopedic topics for joint replacement, surface modification technologies, soft matter physics, MEMS technologies, and related topics. Passing away of Professor Hirokawa

 Professor Hirokawa in our research center, suddenly passed away with disease on 31st March 2015. We are deeply saddened by the news of his loss and would like to praise his outstanding accomplishment and to convey our deepest sympathies to his family in these hours of bereavement.
